Object-Relational Mappers (ORMs) are software tools that facilitate data management in an application by simplifying the interaction between programming objects and the underlying relational database. Relational databases store data in tabular form, whereas object-oriented programming languages (such as Python, Java or C#) use objects to organize and manipulate data.

The main purpose of an ORM is to bridge these two worlds, allowing developers to manipulate objects in code while ensuring data persistence in the database. Here are some of the main uses of ORMs in application development:

Database Abstraction: ORMs provide a layer of abstraction on top of the database, allowing developers to work with objects and classes rather than raw SQL queries. This simplifies the code and makes development more object-oriented.

Increased Productivity: By eliminating the need to write complex SQL queries, ORMs save developers time. Repetitive tasks, such as creating, updating, and deleting records, are simplified and automated.

Code portability: By using an ORM, application code often becomes more portable between different databases. ORMs abstract the specific details of the database, making it easier to move from one database to another without having to rewrite much of the code.

Managing relationships between objects: ORMs make it easier to manage complex relationships between objects, by allowing relationships like associations, joins, and inheritance to be defined directly in code, without having to write complicated SQL queries.

Security: ORMs often include built-in security mechanisms, such as preventing SQL injection attacks. By encapsulating database access, they help minimize the risk of security breaches related to direct manipulation of SQL queries.

Simplified maintenance: By using an ORM, changes to the database structure can be managed more easily. Necessary changes can often be made at the object model level without having to modify numerous SQL queries scattered throughout the code.

Conclusion

ORMs are widely used in modern software development, and many popular frameworks, such as Hibernate for Java, Entity Framework for .NET, and SQLAlchemy for Python, incorporate ORM features. These tools facilitate the creation of robust, scalable and maintainable applications by simplifying data management and promoting an object-oriented approach.
